toucansam's growing post

#1. What is meant by the terms "rotation symmetry" and "reflection symmetry?" How does this relate to pentominoes? Explain these terms so that anyone who reads your post understands what you mean.

- Rotation symmetry is a figure or object that can be rotated on its axis for more than one rotation and the figure or object is still the same.
- Reflection symmetry is a figure or object that is flipped or reflected like a mirror, but the reflected object is not unique.
- Pentominoes are shapes that are formed with 5 squares, and the corners can't just touch corner to corner it has to go beside, on top or under, the picture on top has 12 unique pentominoes.
- Pentominoes relate to rotation and reflection symmetry because anyway you rotate or reflect the pentomino, it will not turn it into a unique pentomino.

#2. Create a pattern. You must represent this pattern both pictorially (i.e. with a picture or diagram) and with numbers. You must show the first 4 steps of your pattern.

Shape 1.

Shape 2.

Shape 3.

Shape 4.

#3. Describe in words what is occuring with your pattern and if your pattern has an ending or if it continues on indefinately. Make sure that your explaination is clear enough that the person reading your description could understand your pattern without seeing your diagram.

-This shape is the letter "U". It first starts off as 3 blocks going up and 3 blocks going across the bottom to complete the "U", but in this pattern, the horizontal blocks don't increase, only the vertical blocks. As you continue on with the pattern, you add 1 block each to the top of the you, then the shape has 4 blocks going up and 3 going across at the bottom. The next one will have 5 blocks going up and 3 blocks going across the bottom. You can continue this pattern forever but the "U" would sooooo tall yet so skinny, but it's still a "U".

#4. Create a T-Chart that shows what is happening with your Pattern. You must show the first 4 steps of your pattern with the T-Chart.

Great job with the description. My only question is does this pattern end or continue on indefinately?
